Coach Eric Colbert returns to Angelina College as a men’s basketball assistant coach for the upcoming 2023-2024 season. Colbert coached and recruited at AC for two seasons (2016-2018) prior to this return. During his time here with the Roadrunners, Colbert was able to assist in a notching a 22-win season and semifinal finish in the regional tournament while also recruiting two Angelina College NJCAA All-Americans (Kevin Norman in 2019, and Travis Henson in 2020).

After leaving Angelina College, Colbert was an assistant for a season at Independence College under head coach Tony Turner. Colbert would then move on to Holmes Community College, where in four seasons the Bulldogs would qualify for the Regional Tournament three times, winning the 2021 Region XXIII Championship and winning a first-round matchup against defending national champion Vincennes College. Colbert would again coach an NJCAA All-American in Kaleb Higgins (2021).

Colbert is a veteran coach in NJCAA basketball and Region XIV. He began his NJCAA coaching career at Navarro College in 2008-09 alongside Head Coach Johnny Estelle, and together they experienced one of the best runs in Region XIV history. In five seasons together, the duo led the Bulldogs to three Region XIV Championships (2009, 2010, 2012), one National Final Four appearance (2010) and one Region XIV conference Championship (2013). Their Navarro teams averaged 25 wins per season, graduated 90% of their student-athletes and boasted a 98% placement rate to the NCAA level. At Navarro, Colbert coached two NJCAA All-Americans in DeAndre Brown (2009) and Matt Pressey (2010).

Colbert’s other junior college stop was at Pratt Community College. While at Pratt, Colbert was a part of staffs that averaged 21 wins per season. Under Colbert’s guidance, the Beavers would win a co-conference championship in 2015-2016. Colbert would recruit two student-athletes who would go on to be 1st Team all KJCCC in Vladimir Brodziansky and Isaiah Bailey. Colbert also has Division 1 coaching experience spending two season at the University of Nebraska under head coach Doc Sadler. While at Nebraska, Colbert would coach in two NIT tournaments while coaching against some of the most talented players in the world.

Colbert is originally from Compton, California and prepped at Verbum Dei High School. He participated in basketball, football and Student Government while at the All Boys Catholic School. Verbum Dei would win three League Championships and one CIF State Championship in basketball and qualify for the CIF Playoffs in football while Colbert was in high school. He would graduate and attend junior college at Compton College, where he played basketball before earning a scholarship to Humboldt State University. There, he played for the legendary Tom Wood.

Colbert is a graduate of Humboldt State University (B.A. English). He is the son of Chester and Lee Etta Colbert, and he has one son, Brayden Sidney Colbert.
