AC Soccer Teams Hosting Doubleheader, Paying Tribute to Hurricane Harvey Heroes
Oct 12, 2017

Between games of Friday?s home doubleheader at Jase Magers Field in Lufkin, Angelina College soccer teams will pay tribute to the young Lufkin men who sacrificed themselves for the sake of others during August?s Hurricane Harvey disaster.

Tomas Carreon (who played soccer for Lufkin High School on the very pitch where Friday?s games will take place), Alonzo Guillen and Luis Ortega left Lufkin on August 30 on their way to assist with rescue efforts in the Houston area. When their boat capsized in the strong currents, only Ortega survived.

Children of the families will serve as honorary team captains, and the teams will honor Carreon and Guillen in a pre-game ceremony prior to the Lady Roadrunner soccer game.

At 5 p.m., the Roadrunners will battle Coastal Bend College. AC?s men will try to break a two-game losing streak against the conference?s fourth-place team, while the Cougars are trying to climb their way up the standings in hopes of ensuring a better playoff seeding.

The Lady Roadrunners, on the other hand, are clinging to the final playoff spot with just three games to play. Friday?s opponent, Navarro College, boasts a 12-1, 6-1 record; the Lady Bulldogs are ranked No. 5 in the nation, with their lone loss coming to No. 1 Tyler Junior College.

The Lady ?Runners and Navarro kick off at 7 p.m.
